Subscribing to and reading a feed with Mozilla’s Firefox browser is really quick and easy.

Just browse your way to a website and look down to the lower right-hand corner of your screen, not where the actual web page is displayed, but just below it in the browser bar at the bottom of the screen. If you see an orange cube there with what looks like radiating radio waves, put your cursor over it. That’s the Firefox Live Bookmarks button.

For example, use Firefox to view my Free RSS Resources website. Notice the orange cube in the lower right-hand corner. Put your cursor on the orange cube but don’t click on it yet.

If the site you’re on has an RSS feed which supports Firefox’ Live Bookmarks feature (as most sites with feeds do), the text Add Live Bookmark for this page’s feed or something like that will appear when you put your cursor over the orange button.

Click the orange button. This will bring up a small menu with one or more feeds to choose from. On my site, the choices currently are: Subscribe to RSS 2.0, Subscribe to RSS .92, or Subscribe to Atom 0.3.

Click on one of the choices. This will pop up an Add Bookmark box, which lets you rename the feed if you want and gives you the option of where to put it in your bookmarks. You can mix it in with all your other bookmarks, or you can use the box to create a new directory of bookmarks (called RSS Feeds for example, or whatever you wish).

Whenever you want to see and read the latest articles, just go into your bookmarks list where you placed the feed, put your cursor on the feed and it will open a new menu with all of the feed items listed. Click on one of the items and the complete article will open up in your browser.

If The Live Bookmark System Doesn’t Recognize A Feed That You Want To Add

If, for some reason, you’ve browsed to a site which does have a feed that is not recognized by Firefox’ Live Bookmarks system, you can still add it manually by following a process similar to the one I discussed a couple of days ago for My Yahoo and other feed readers. You’ll know that the feed doesn’t support Live Bookmarks because either: 1) there is no orange cube displayed in the corner of your screen, or 2) there is an orange cube but when you put your cursor on it, it says something like There’s no feed to add.

In either case, you can right-click on the RSS/XML icon or link on the web page which actually provides the feed, select Copy Link Location, and then:

• Select the Bookmarks menu
• Click on Manage Bookmarks
• Click on File in the new window which pops up
• Click on New Live Bookmark
• Enter a name for the feed, Paste the URL of the feed into the Feed Location area, and add a description if you feel like it.

Now you can access the feed and its contents as a Live Bookmark.
